In this task my group (Jason, Charlotte, Alex, me) were instructed to build a suitable digital image advertising Renault Twizzy Urban. We first began by creating a mind map on expression of the direction we wanted our advertisement to go, by first isolating the pros and bonuses of the car we built words we could associate with those pros by using the urban dictionary and on line thesaurus; after starting with a words such as car, safe, environment, silent, we eventually came to these words: "Advance" We liked this word due to its relation to an actual movement of a car and it moves forward both in time and in terms of future cars. "Relentless" This term was good in terms of the cars impact on the environment; a car that is both fuel efficient and far less toxic to our world, would be truly relentless in the future of car production. "Intelligence" A simple word with a big meaning for a car, this word gives the impression that the car is both smart and the buyer itself would also be so for purchasing it; its unique design and relevance to its futuristic fuel source. After much discussion we decided that Advance was the most suitable, all of the words had the pros however this one had the least negative appeal, Intelligence came across a little cheesy and big headed something we wouldn't want our audience to think, also Relentless is already strongly associated with an energy drink and may distract the buyer from the product that is actually being advertised, on the other hand Advance only strong negative we could bring up was that people who may be stuck in their own ways wouldn't find this very appealing but in this we came to the realisation that most of the people who are this way already own a car and most likely wouldn't be interested in buying a new car.
Once we had developed an idea to literally "Advance" from, we began to research advertisement that reflected both the target audience; people wanting to buy a new car and people who are interested in world wide conservation and found that a clean and sleek design perhaps featuring some for of environmental friendly sentiment such as pristine cartoon trees for example seem to be the most common among the top brands of car production and future technology advertisements; things that make the audience feel like what they are doing will strongly benefit them and that what they are buying will be noticed and revered by those closest to them, below are a few examples of what we found:
We found multiple images most of which shown a lot of green, growing life or the earth itself.
Implementation -
We plan to implement this advertisement across a city environment, something seen in every subway, street corner and places where people will either travel by frequently or sit/stand in waiting for something, for example posting this on the back of a subway wall where people will be waiting for the train will mean that people will stare, read and re read the advertisement; the bright colours used will also attract attention away from the brick walls and boring scenery further enhancing its effectiveness on the general public.
The above image is a compilation of all our research and design ideas, mind mapping, idea mapping, research and collaboration ultimately produced a word from which we further researched and produced in order to create a far more in depth and great idea; as is evident from the above mind map and description our thought process into the word advance captivated the team and brought out both a text word form with a capitalized A for effect and the physical representation of the word itself, the car is moving with the world; featured on top of the planet giving it prominence, the size also contributes to this. Further still the trees help to offset the greater feel of the image and appeal to another part of the car itself that the word alone couldn't do, to this end the natural aspect of the trees enhance and uplift the car as a fluid and natural creation; appealing to the stereotype that natural is best, selling the cars features without the need to mention them in a text format.
For this task we were shown how to make more appeasing form of presentation using a program called adobe indesign
In this Demo we were shown how to import images, re-size them (however this leaves them very pix-elated) and so we also found out that the images should be sized in Photoshop and then imported in, We also learnt how to create new layers or pages and create and play with text.
through this small tutorial we learnt the benefits of using Indesgn over another forms of presentation programs such as PowerPoint and how using this program could give us a competitive edge over others, due to the complexity and flexibility of the program
For this section we had to come up with ideas, idea progression and posters for the London Olympics 2012 in groups. My group for the project was Myself, Connor and Richard.,
We first created a mind map, listing things that could be used from London itself, cultural diversity and games that take place within the Olympics.
After this we were all still very separated about our ideas, and so we all created mood boards, to help develop ideas that we had, to see if after we could come together. The main subject of my mood board was Animals, animals that are special or associated with different cultures
after more toying with our ideas Me and Connor began going though each others ideas, we came up with the idea of having the Olympic ring with each with its own image, in essence this would become a 5 different images, magazine adds or posters, which would all link together, or come together/untie somehow.
After going through various options of what to use and what to include in our image, we came up with a relatively final idea, to have 5 traditionally British/London things all with circles or rings in that could then be used to show an Olympic ring. And then we would bring them together in the Olympic arena
Also to link the images further we came up with the Slogan "Lets Unite" bringing a a sense of unity to both the Olympic games and our posters. Also at the bottom of each poster we are adding the London 2012 Olympics logo.
After Discussion me and Connor decided that we would only do 4 British images and then have the 5th ring as the Olympic arena
We will be using the five different coloured Olympic rings to represent something different in each image.
Eventually we decided on what five things to have represent London and Britain and what rings to use in which Poster
the 6 things we we decided to choose were:
The London Eye
Big Ben
Underground Sign
Cup of Tea
Red Bus
but as I said, after discussion me and Connor decided to only do 4 London images, and we took away the red bus and changed the last ring to be the Olympic ring.
After deciding on images, we wanted to have the images come in the order of the rings, so we decided to associate's different coloured rings with the different images
1st - Blue - Big Ben
2nd - Yellow - Underground Sign
3rd - Black - Arena
4th - Green - Cup of Tea
5th - Red - London Eye
Through discussion, we decided to have the black ring around the Arena last, because we though using the arena as a point where they can all come together - London uniting in the Olympic stadium. The rest shall be in their normal order. Another thing which is being included within the last poster is that all the rings shall be implemented to form the Olympic logo
One thing we decided on, as we already associated colours with the images, and we wanted to have the stadium last, we will have it at the end but show that the black ring is in the middle, and possibly holding it all together, or uniting them together.
London Eye, was created by Connor, with my small help with the layer styles
London Underground sign - this image was relatively tricky to make because the quality of the actual underground sign was really bad, and so I had to find a new one to replace it and still allow the actual underground sign to still be legible and easy to read. After I had found a new one, I made the new ring to fit the sign and then put a underground sign over the top.
The London Eye - This idea was really simple and yet I think works really well, having playing with lighting effect and colour styles it was easy to swap colours and then implace the ring.
Cup of tea - This was created by Connor
Olympic Stadium - the base of this image was found and ring put on by Richard (such as sizing of the ring and implementing the 2012 logo on the arena floor) , the rest however was created by me I added the layer style, brought in the other rings and then font added by me not a taxing or time consuming job, but still not ideal. However through discussion decided on what to have where and in what style, so from the input of my peers we came to this finished poster.
After completing the posters, we were advised to show how the would be shown within a magazine, I thought it would be better to have them spaced out, thus becoming a series of posters within a magazine. But as shown here they are unison and one after the other for the purpose of showing more than one in a basic magazine/book outline.
Presentation
Due to techniacal difficulty, the file we had made with the presentation did not work and so I have print screened each page, so that you get a brief understanding of the presentation
Although the presentation is very bare, we decided to have it more visual and talk through it apposed to just reading from the screen.
For this task we all gave 4 words; two nouns & two adjective, from these words we then chose one adjective and one word (twice) from there we had to create our own characters based on these words. With these characters we had to do concept art, character bios and then create a game cover with them on.
First character: Sadistic Fox
The reason I chose these two words because I thought there were a lot to play with, in the fact that I could produce something like an evil Sonic the hedgehog character.
In the end I went for a more creepy look for my fox, really playing on the sadistic side of it, ensuring that the fox aspect it still clearly visible and yet is sadistic and creepy.
Bio:
the Sadistic for would walk upright, with a slight haunch. The fox wears Gauntlets sharpened at the finger tips for clawing and slashing (can tear through flesh easily), he would have the capability to jump really long distances i.e. from Building to building. The sadistic fox would have large mouth stitched at the sides to give the impression that he was once experimented on but that is never really clear. The stitches prevent it eating anything to large at any one time, but still have the capability of eating relatively large things at once i.e. entire chickens (preventing the fox from eating children in one) He also has a large bushy tail, which can be used to blind his targets by shaking off his hair into their eyes.
The sadistic fox also wears a form of loin cloth over his crotch and an armband of which origins are unknown.
Finally after all the design processes we then made it into a game case.
I had to make a few adjustments to my model due the fact the creation process was quite difficult, and for a mock-up I went for easier solution
Neurotic Egg
I chose these words purely for the fact that I wanted a more comical game idea and so I thought the idea of a crazy egg going around the egg civilization killing other eggs would appeal to people with a silly humor or just a silly game to blow off steam too. And so as an Idea I thought that it had its possibilites would both be positive and negative
Bio
The Neurotic egg would walk with widened legs, and bent knees similar to that of a stereotypical cowboy.
He would carry a army knife or some form of commando knife which would be ideal for murdering the egg civilians, he would wear black trousers and a smart black shoes, and sleeves of a t-shirt, but being an egg no sign of a t-shirt opposed to the sleeves. He also wears a pair of glove to prevent any finger prints begin left behind. He will speak with a rough voice to portray that he is a bad guy.
I liked the Orange web banner (one on the right) it advertises the Orange network cover for mobiles. I likes this particular advert because it thinks outside of the box, it doesn't follow normal standards as such, it doesn't go on about how much better their coverage is and what not it says why we think we should use the company, but in a more childish way of sorts. But done in a way that will amuse most ages, I would say however that it is directed at a younger audience opposed to a middle aged+ audience. This is good as we are the kind of people that have phones more than any other age range. I believe this to be a really good idea, because by using random things to promote their facts and company it is more eye catching and will draw more attention then just normal boring adverts.
I liked this advert despite the fact it is probably fake and may ruin your computer I thought it was quite amusing using the picture of Albert Einstein to advertise IQ which is associated with intelligence, the idea is probably not original I like the image they use for Einstein and I always find it funny and makes me laugh, in my opinion in using this particular image of Einstein is slightly oxymoronic due to the fact Einstein being the genius that he is he looks rather special in this image and thus advertising IQ I thought too added to the amusement of this image
This webbanner was found on a site called wowwiki (a wikipedia for World of Warcraft) and I thought it was really funny, the webbanner was like a short advert advertising warcraft using Chuck Noris. As most people know of Chuck Noris's nosicle films and know how far-fetched some of them can be, it sort of takes the mick of that and Chuck Norris actually starrs within the advert and at the end he says that he 'approves this game' which as a lot of people know is a big deal. This advert would be for all kinds of ages, from 12+ to all of whom know chuck norris and like MMORPG and possibly younger.
TV commercials
This advert was the coolest advert I had ever seen when it first came out, using the catch phrase "Citron C4 - Alive with technology"
which is really clever making the Car transform and come alive as such demonstrating great skill on ice as it does flawless turns and stops perfectally which is a reflection on the car saying that it is able to do that. This advert will appeal to all ages as a child I really liked and my Dad thought it was really cool too, but in cleverly doing this it widens the audience all though they cannot all buy the car a child maybe heavily influecned and want their parents to have the car.
I thought this advert was really well done as nothing had really been done like this at the time (as it was out before Transformers) and was unique.
This advert is for the MMORPG World of Warcraft, I likes this advert because it took a celebrity that is really well known due to the Austin Powers movies (he is Minime) and got him to advertise World of Warcraft and they also made the in-game character look like the celebrity which too adds to the humour. At parts of the advertisement they even 'comment' on his size "World of Warcraft is huge, like my mage" which is the smallest playable race in WoW which in my opinion makes it funnier.
This advert would advertise to all ages, to the teens and Adults who have watched the Austin Powers movies and recognise him or to people or just to people who think this would be there kind of game.
This advertises a tv show 'The Amazing World of Gumball' which is a childs programme which is clearly shown in this advertisment.
The advert I thought was quite funny and random which would appeal to the intended audience. Certain parts really amused me to the point I wanted to watch and episode, The thing I like about this advert is that it takes a child tv show and gives it a sort of movie trailer kind of theme when I think adds to the humor and even comments on the 'movie voice' which is always used in movie trailers.
Guerilla Advertising
This advert is for a film (wasnt aired in this country) along with the company that is showing the film. I think this advert is really well done, and may actually concern people when they initially look at the image which I think is genious. Also the fact that they are using a fake arm to come out of the trunk will make people look twice and possible look around the cab as to what the hell is going on, which hopefully should direct them to the advert next the arm. Another positive to using this perticular advert for the film is the fact that it will also show the viewers what the genre the film is.
This advert is against littering on the beach, and obviously to dispose of your cigarette buds carefully. I think this advert too is very carefully because people who normally just smoke and then fling their buds away may think twice once seeing this advert. And it is obvious who the audience is - not only smokers but to everyone else who may benifit from this advert.
This advert is for National Geographic I think this too is very clever, this advert is aimed for those who are interested in sharks or shark lovers, and is shown by the doors on the tram being shark jaws and then as they close it eats those who just got onto the tram, which just looks awesome. It may also appeal to young children because children think sharks are cool and may cause them to go on the tram, so not only does it advertise the channel for the sharks but also may make people want to go on the tram.
Magazine Advertisment
This advert is promoting the Apple Macbook Pro, basically showing off how thin and light the new laptop is (however this would be shown in performance as macs arent good). It uses the double page spread of a magazine which is clever as it can show the screen and keyboard of the device, the target audience would be for those who have money to spend on over-priced laptops and like apple.
This advert is for very low UV protection sun tan lotion, in the fact the sheets provided are reflective for those who use the tin sheets to get increased sun tan lotion. This advert would be very appealing to most who enjoy the beach and sunny weather along with getting a tan. It would also remind people to use some form of UV protectiong even if it is very low.
This advert is for the Addidas clothes range, it allows you to flip between the pages thus making the woman excersize, and so cleverly it is also promoting fitness. Another thing which it may be trying to get across is the fact there is no wearing out on her bottoms and even if you flip the page there wont be thus shoing that their products are long lasting and fit for purpose.
Concept Fan
For this task Myself, Jason and Max had to come up with design that think outside the box and to help us do that we had a similar method to mind mapping to help us come up with our ideas. The idea behind the concept fan is to allow the creator to think outside the box to over-come problem, to help when it comes to skills we will need in later life so that we will think uniquely and help us think more abstractly which may impress interviewers.
The first problem that we had to overcome by using the concept fan was Litter within the College:
We then had to come up with our own idea and we thought an interesting idea to try and overcome would e smoking, or at least how to deal with smoking by banning it in public areas, making it against the law completely.
One of the positives of doing it this way is that the idea is to think outside the box and so some of the less serious ideas can be as futuristic and slightly wacky as we want, providing as its not to abusive or doesn't kill and it could actually help towards the problem.
This is a poster advertising Emporio Armani Night, one the brands many aftershaves.
This image in particular is very
derogativeand thought provoking, although it may look like a fairly standard seductive poster there is lots of hidden imagery and subliminal messages behind it.
Colour Scheme - The colour scheme of black and red in itself brings meaning to the image, red could by symbolic for lust and danger and black represent mystery and danger, and given that this new fragrance is called night, most could associate's ones lust and danger becoming more apparent with the night. the colour scheme is also very powerful in the fact they stand out very well on each other and is very eye catching
Background, the background used in this image us a flight of stairs, giving no indication where it is going nor where it came from, which too plays on the colour scheme of mystery, giving more of an edge of mystery in the fact that you have no idea where they are or where they are coming from. Also from this flight of stairs it adds a new perceptive of cursorily in the fact the viewer is going to want know where they are and where they are going.
The poses the models are using within this advertisement is very symbolic, the main focus of this advert is the woman and her stance as it were is almost replicating Jesus, with her arms open andbody near enough straight down, this could implement that this perfume will make you more then human in the eyes of others, or that this woman is holy, heavenly and this in return could be reflected in any normal person by wearing this perfume.
The male model in the back is very difficult to see and almost blended in the stairs due lighting and colour of it all, were as this draws attention to the woman, meaning that this holy symbol or spiritual being can attained by a normal person, from wearing this perfume/aftershave
